So, technically we’re still 42 years away from celebrating First Contact Day, but we couldn’t resist! April 5th, 2063, or "First Contact Day" is a Star Trek holiday to celebrate Dr. Zefram Cochrane's initial contact with the Vulcans. This encounter eventually leads to the creation of the United Federation of Planets and the rest is history (or will be eventually). Wow, time travel is tough! Here are 10 Things You Need to Know About First Contact Day: This year (2021) is the 25th anniversary of the film Star Trek: First Contact. This installment tells the tale of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew as they go back in time to help Zefram Cochrane reach warp drive and attract the attention of the Vulcans. The Phoenix is the first shuttlecraft to attempt and reach warp drive. How cool! T’Plana-Hath, a Vulcan Survey Ships tracked the warp signature of the Phoenix, Dr. Cochrane’s ship, and traveled to Bozeman, Montana to investigate. This initial meeting between Dr. Cochrane and the Vulcan’s plays a pivotal role in the creation of The United Federation of Planets. Although Dr. Zefram Cochrane is credited with the First Contact, part of the credit should go to the Next Generation Crew! They go back in time to prevent the cybernetic Borgs from stopping First Contact Day and ending the United Federation of Planets before they could even be created. Cheese pierogies are Dr.Cochrane’s favorite food. It’s not fancy Klingon Fare but hey, he loves them! We think he’d approve of our Star Trek Ceramic Dinnerware to serve these delicacies. Ooby Dooby by Roy Orbison is the first Earth song Vulcans ever heard. We’re so glad they like rock-n-roll like Dr. Cochrane. Although Dr. Cochrane is always hoping to avoid the dreaded “four-alarm” hangover, that doesn’t stop him from drinking whiskey! Pour one from our Star Trek: The Next Generation Whiskey Decanter Set in honor of First Contact Day. Everyone always wants to know: why April 5th? According to Ronald D. Moore, co-writer of Star Trek: First Contact, the only reason this date was chosen is that it’s his oldest son’s birthday. Otherwise, there’s no significance to the chosen date. This movie contains one of the few “Picard loses it” moments that appear in Star Trek. Captain Picard lets his anger get the best of him as he uses this chance to take revenge against the Borgs. In an earlier two-part episode of Star Trek: TNG “The Best of Both Worlds,” Captain Picard is assimilated by the Borg. This is a haunting experience for him and he uses that anger to seek his full revenge in Star Trek: First Contact. I guess resistance isn’t so futile! For more information on First Contact Day and to hear more of Dr. Zefram Cochrane’s story watch Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Metamorphosis,” Star Trek: The Next Generation feature film “First Contact,” and Star Trek: Voyager “Homestead.” So, how do we plan to celebrate you ask?
