As crazy as it is to imagine, there was once a time when the humble T-shirt was anything but a wardrobe staple. It appeared somewhere in between the Spanish-American War and 1913, when the United States Navy began issuing it to sailors to wear beneath their uniforms. It was scooped up by the Army a few years later during WWI and became a standard-issue undergarment for their soldiers as well. As servicemen headed home across the states, so, too, did their shirts. Soon, dockworkers, miners and farmers grew hip to the lightweight garment that kept them just warm enough when under clothes, yet didn't overheat them. Many of those same men would go on to wear the shirts under their uniforms in WWII. (In fact, the first graphic tee to be photographed was printed by the US Air Corps Gunnery School in 1942. Remember that for bar trivia night.)
That's about where its humble beginnings end. After the war, smoldering Hollywood megastar Marlon Brando sported a white T-shirt in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and the rest is history. When the self-expressive 1960s rolled around, T-shirts, once considered nothing but an undergarment, became wearable picket signs/wearable art/wearable marketing.
These days, not much has changed. Graphic T-shirts let you say what you want to say without opening your mouth. In the Toynk.com closet, you'll find all sorts of shirts dedicated to or replicated from your favorite fandoms. DC or Marvel. Lannister or Stark. Matt Smith or David Tenant. Plus, you know you've always wondered if you'd look like Screech or AC Slater in a Bayside Tigers T-shirt.
